Hello! I was recently watching the Hp academy youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz-vekMoKdM&t=2333s and it was about if you should run a bov or not. In the video, an 8474 BW Efr turbo was used and different types of tests were done. I didn't hear it explicitly said if running just the block off plate on these efr turbos was ok for long-term use, however, it seemed like all of the testing seemed to point that it was and from what I can tell, it was implied it would be fine. I ask because I personally just ordered an 8374 (dual ball bearing) and again, from what I can gather from this video and testing done, I SHOULD be ok running just the block off plate and no bov like this video tests, correct? (Daily, spirited driving) Just wanted some extra clarification.
I don't care about shift speed recovery of turbo or anything like that, this car is just for pure joy at the moment.
It's going on an 99 fd with what I'm assuming is going to be around 1 bar of pressure, if that. Thank you for your help

Running with no BOV will result in compressor surge when you change gear or back off the throttle. This has two negative consequences. Firstly it places increased thrust load on the thrust bearings and secondly it puts stress on the compressor wheel itself. The thrust load is generally not considered to be an issue with a ball bearing turbo however there is still the potential to damage the compressor wheel over time. The risk of damage is directly related to the boost level and admittedly 1 bar is relatively low. Long story short, it's unlikely to be an issue with your application but there is a small risk of longterm damage so you need to weigh this up. If it helps with your decision, I am running a BOV on our FD3S with the same 8474 turbo.
