Hello,

I have a 03 Miata with the Rocketeer swap. Jaguar 3.0 V6 from a 2001 S-type. (Ford Duratec). I'll be installing the EMU black hopefully next week and I have a few questions.

I need to make clear from the start that I'm really not interested in learning how to tune. I'm fine with learning some basics. But in general I'll let a professional handle the actual tuning. I've been employed as a mechanical/electrical assembler for over 25 years. So I know my way around mechanical things and wiring. But when it comes to programming and working with things like an ECU, I struggle a bit.

I have a tuning file from someone with the same swap kit. So for the most part, I have what I need. But my configuration will be a little different than his. His has a single narrow band o2 and running open loop. Mine has 2 wide band LSU 4.9 o2's and as such would like to run closed loop.

I'll also be adding a knock sensor. I got that from ECU Master, so configuring that is easy.

In OE configuration the engine has a head temperature sender which if I'm not mistaken is what they use instead of coolant temp. I don't like the location of the coolant sensor. It's in line on the radiator hose along with the t stat about 6" away from the block. So with initial warm up, the engine is getting a little hotter until the t stat opens. Not ideal, but maybe I shouldn't worry about it? I would like to send that signal to the ECU. But I'm not sure if that's possible. I have all the calibration data, But I don't think it falls within the parameters of what the ECU can do. So I'm looking for answers for that.

The engine also has a factory oil temperature sender. Same issue as the head temp sensor. I have all the calibration data, But I don't think it's compatible. If it isn't, I can get a different one to install. I can go with one that ECU Masters offers, but it's kinda pricey for a temp sensor. But it would be the easy button.

I would also like to input the oil pressure. I have a VDO 360-009 pressure sender. I would think that is compatible. But I would need some help configuring it.

I would like to wire in what I need to get AC working. I don't have AC right now. But Rocketeer is working on a kit for it and I would like the electrical end to be ready to go. The EMU black has all the inputs and outputs for it. I'm not sure how I would need to configure it though. I believe there are 2 different temp senders involved. I have to look into it more.

And last, but not least, Speedometer correction. My tire diameter is smaller than OE and I changed my ring and pinion. So the speedo is off by quite a bit. If I'm understanding it right, I can input my speed signal and calibrate it within the ECU to correct my speedometer. If this isn't possible, I already have a yellow box I can install to fix that. But it would be nice to run it through the ECU.

Thanks for reading. I hope someone here can help.

If you want someone to help you (ie, do the work and give it back to you), then post your existing EMU Black configuration.

How do I do that? I tried. I clicked The attach file "browse" button. Found the file, but how do I attach it?

It may be that it doesn't like the file extension. I just select the file with the "Browse" button, and then click the "post reply" button. You might try putting in a zip file (Windows "Send to Compressed Folder"), which will create a compressed file with the same name and an extension of .zip.

My apologies for going silent for a week. Busy and my laptop was giving me wireless troubles. Which still isn't fixed. But it's working for now.

I decided to go with the ECU Master oil temp sensor. It's the easy button.

For head temp, eh, I can forgo that too. It isn't 100% necessary to run through the ECU. Some others have wired it into a multi function gauge via analogue. So I'll just do that and let the ECU use the coolant temp sensor.

But I still want to use the speedometer correction option. I just need to understand how to do that.

And also I want to wire the AC stuff into it. I think I should be able to figure out what wires go where. But I need to know if I need to do any calibrations, or even get different temp sensors.

I put the tuning file into a zip folder. Hopefully that will load.

PS

I'm heading out to the garage now to start installation.

My oil Pressure sender is;

common ground

10-180 ohm

80 psi/5.5 bar

When I go to the calibration wizard, The input parameters are pressure (ok, got that) and voltage (default is .51 to 4.51). I don't understand what to put in there. I don't have Ohms as an option for the calibration.

I would say their calibrations are setup for a solid-state sensor. What pullup / pulldown resistors are either installed in your harness or included in your input (Temperature inputs often have 1-2k pullup resistors to 5V).

If you wired a 500 ohm ressistor between 5V and your signal , then a 5bar VDO-style sensor would have a calibration like:

PSI Voltage

0 .15V

5 .34

11 .64

20 .93

31 1.29

40 1.57

49 1.83

60 2.12

69 2.32
