Hi, I'd like to ask questions regarding Ignition coils.

I myself own a Lancer Evo 5. Currently using stock coils, pushing about 400whp with pump gas.

Let's just say that I wanted to build the engine, with a 1000whp in mind, running race fuel or e85.

Do I need to upgrade the coils? Would the Denso Yaris coils be sufficient, or do I need a GTR R35 Coils / IGN1A coils? What's the correlation between fuel, ignition timing, and engine power in regards to ignition coils? Will the stock coil be a bottleneck with 1000 WHP in mind? How do you know that a certain brand or type of ignition coils would be sufficient for the build?

Thank you.

Hi. I'm running 2.4L 4g64 with ported head and 3+ bar of boost making around 750 hp at the crank along with 100 hp nitrous shot. For that type of boost you need an ignition system that would be strong enough to provide stable spark. The higher the boost the more difficult it is for spark plug to create the spark - that is why you need something stronger. For 1000 hp you will need to reduce the spark plug gap down to 0.5-0.6mm and they will have to be about 10 or 11 points of heat range.

Stock ignition coils are Ok up to 500whp but for 1000 hp you will need wither COP system http://ru.sssperformance.com/sssperformance-cop-evo-9/ or something CDI like I use http://ru.sssperformance.com/sssperformance-cop-evo-4-8-2-1/

You also need to keep in mind that if you are going to use wet nitrous system you should run 4 channels ignition system instead of stock wasted spark to avoid backfire in intake manifold.
