Tell us a little about you. What cars you are interested, where you are from and why you are interested in learning to tune.
Hello,
I am Ben from the uk.
I have been making my way through the engine tuning courses introduction, EFI, AFR and currently doing the reflash and standalone todo.
I have mechanical knowledge as previously working in the heavy vehicle industry.
I want to try and start doing some practice side of this and see if I can get my head around it all a bit more.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to maybe some ways I can do this? Weather it be a virtual/simulator?
Or happy to trial some stuff on my vehicles if at all possible (safely of course)
I currently own a 1.6tdi caddy van which has a few mods and already has a map on as far as im aware but would be happy to have a play around with that if I can on a separate file or whatever if possible, or maybe carry out some data logging to start and go from there!?
I also have another project which is a full conversion to a 2.0tfsi engine and the end goal would be to put some form or a tune on that eventually if possible.
Anyone have any advice or next steps I could do?
Thanks!
Sunny UK? Must be a different one to where I live!
Have you done the diesel courses? The basic one is free! Is it just engine or also interested in brakes and suspension?
Haha was a bit of sarcasm.
Ah I will have a look at that but more was asking to do with the practical side, just to give something a go more so.
Ah more engine tuning at the moment tbf just always fancied giving it a go as a hobby but need to actually get into it now I feel
Have you worked out the best way? I have been facing same problem here, got a daily use car not the best for tuning and not sure where to start. I am thinking about finding a tuning simulator, but would that be a great Idea? My mail goal is tuning performance cars for multiple purposes including drift, daily, and racing cars.
No unfortunately not.
Kind of come to a halt, havent really done much on it. I would love to give it a go but no real luck to be honest, would love to know how people start off properly
I would recommend you to start practicing data logging and then practical tuning on a vehicle that is available, or at least data logging by itself just to view and visualize what you have been looking at in the videos. At the start of your performance tuning journey I found that it would be financially difficult to start since you got no experience and at most of the time you are probably going to break something or blow up your engine if not careful. A great solution is finding a cheap car with very low parts price, such that if you blew up the engine or ruined your transmission replacing any is not that costly, might not be suitable for everyone to do, but a great way to test and learn new things. Another thing make sure there at least is a community or resources that you can access to the car you are training on so you won't get lost.
Now this is what a local tuner has done before and recommended me to do so most of the time that is a great way to test your skills and knowledge.
For my situation I am watching worked examples of practical tuning, looking for some simulators online, but I did not get enough time to search enough, and will be hopefully saving some cash to find some cheap platform to do what I have advised above.
Wish you best of luck.
