Hello, I'm doing a 2015 sti power steering rack swap into a 2002 wrx and am planning on doing braided lines for the build. Given the high pressure of the pump-rack feed line (1200psi), I'm thinking that going with reusable hose ends is probably not advised, and it's better to get a pre-made hose with crimped ends. However, this assumption is based on zero hard data on the allowable burst pressure of the different ends.
I've found some industrial hydraulic fitting information, but concerned about making an apples to oranges comparison. Is anyone able to tell me what some best practices are on when it's safe to use one type of fitting vs the other? Thanks
Burst pressure rating is of the hoses itself - not the fittings - for what it's worth Earl's themselves offers both crimp and reusable fittings for their 'power steering' hose line, as well as I've never had a failure of any reusable (though I tend to use them once and then they age out) fittings outside of assembly error.
Yeah, I'd seen the pressure ratings for the different hoses, but have always associated the weakest point in a system as where there is a transition which is why I assumed that the connection between the fitting and the hose is the weakest point (unless using a much weaker hose). In this case I'd be using -6 SS braided PTFE where the working pressure is 2500 which seemed like a lot to trust a compression fit via threading.
That's great to know that a supplier like Earl's use both in their offerings for power steering line.
Not reusing fittings, especially in high pressure situations, regardless of their name, sounds like a great SOP to avoid unnecessary failures if possible. Thanks for the response!
I use Speedflow Power Steering fittings in the power steer systems on cars that I work on, I have never had a failure or leak using these fittings. A lot of motorsport related brake and clutch fittings are assembled (not crimped) fittings, and these are seeing higher pressures than a power steering system.
