I ran across this interesting article regarding how the Octane rating system came into being, and how more characterization that just Octane is required to determine Knock sensitivity, and best mixture for maximum power.

I'll read it later, thank you - from my school days it's Motor Octane Rating and Research Octane Rating? The US uses the average but the British, and their colonies, use just the RON - which can cause some confusion, especially with blends and alcohol fuels.

This article is historical regarding supercharged airplane engines in the 1940's...
