I am working on a little project in my shed, a 2002 Suzuki Grand Vitara, and I want to upgrade from cable throttle to E-throttle as part of the project, but in its current format the auto trans has cable operated kick down, I have been trying to find info on how to upgrade the kickdown on the transmission but have not really been able to find anything in regards to this. I am thinking I might have to set up my system in it's original setup with the cable set up and add a pressure sensor to the transmission lines to check out the line pressure in the system when the kick down is activated and log the info in relation to the throttle position. Thinking that if I can gather this info and also the amount of travel in kick down cable I may be able to replace the long cable with a short cable operated by a linear actuator controlled in relation to throttle position to retain the same cable control properties as before but controlled by the ECU instead. That is where my brain storming has gotten me so far. Not sure if anyone has had any experience with something like this but thought I would throw if out to the brains trust to see if I am barking up the right tree.

So the cable-activated kick-down probably operates a switch. Can you figure out if this is switching the kickdown signal to ground or power by examining a stock vehicle (or perhaps reviewing the circuit in the factory workshop manual)?

If so, perhaps you can duplicate this with an output from your ECU, something say controlled by just the throttle position, like the cable switch was.

Hi David, thanks for the info, I have been trying to find info on what the cable kickdown does in this transmission, if it just opens a valve or as you said activates a switch, have had a bit of a look under the car bar it is hard to tell at the moment as the transmission is still in the vehicle and there is not a huge amount of room. I have not been able to find a switch per say, but it may be internal. I have a service manual for the vehicle but it doesn't seem to go in to detail about what the kickdown cable does, just details the adjustment of the cable etc. I am also trying to find out what the transmission model is as that might point me in the right direction for a manual that might have that information. If it is just a switch as you said that would make life easy but I feel it may be opening up a valve with the cable. I will keep you posted on what I find. Thanks again.
