what is the general consensus on ceramic and other coatings for pistons and other engine parts?

Seems to be all the rage for intake and exhaust parts... irrespective of benefits, I can hardly see anything potentially damaging going on there. However, coatings on the pistons just seems like they might cause particles to chip off over time...

I've used ceramic crown coatings in the past but I've never done a back to back test to validate their usefulness. I can't personally see any downsides and the theory of them is sound. A proper coating that's applied by a professional company shouldn't have any chance of flaking off. As for the pistons, I'd actually recommend you have them coated by the manufacturer if you want to try a coating.
