Instant data reading from a truck's ECU

Hello all,

I'm studying my phd and try to write my thesis on optimum fuel consumption depending on; the weight of cargo in a trailer of a truck and slope of the route. I'll use the VT-CPFM 2 mathematical model to calculation and real life data to calibrate it so I can apply prediction algorithms to determine appropriate speed ranges for eco-driving.

Therefore, I need a device that can access the ECU of truck (for example a Volvo FH460) and read parameters like RPM, fuel consumption etc. Beside that I need to store that data to analyse it later. Since there may be different brand and models of trucks that I can convince the companies to work with me, I can't address a spesific vehicle model. Also I need to get the GPS data, so maybe there's a device that can do that either. I have no idea about it.

Consequently, what kind of datalogger (or any different device) I can use for my research ?

sorry for the delayed response, I would recommend a general datalogger of any sort in anticipation that the vehicle has a CAN bus (and presumably is running J1939)

motec dashes, AiM dashes and solo2dl's, all would be valid options, additionally, you could run a standalone Raw CAN datalogger like a CSS electronics CANedge.

Solo2DL can log gps position and up to 125 CAN messages. so if the vehicle was J1939, it's more than capable and likely recommended for the task given their bitmasking option for the arbitration ID of a CAN message.
