Summary

00:00 - Second to last for today comes from Boris who's asked, is there any golden formula when you go from naturally aspirated to a boosted engine? Is there some place you can see to remove 1° of timing for every one psi of boost? Is this true or no? The answer there is no unfortunately.
00:17 There isn't a golden rule, there's some guidelines that we can start with but ultimately we're still going to need to actually tune and test the engine.
00:25 So generally as a bit of a guideline I'd expect to be removing about 2° per 20 kPa of boost pressure.
00:33 So that's going to be probably a pretty close starting point.
00:38 So what I mean here is if I've tuned up to let's say 1 bar of boost and I know what my timing is at that point and it's safe, at 120 kPa I'd be pulling 2° out of that next row and another 2° at 140 kPa.
00:52 And in fact I might start by maybe going a little bit more conservative than that and pull 3° out.
00:57 Now why we can't say that this rule is going to be consistent is that that'll work up to a point but as we've pushed the turbo harder and harder, it becomes less and less efficient, it creates more and more heat and more and more exhaust back pressure so what we see is the timing at some point will actually start to fall off a cliff as we add more and more boost pressure so really no golden rule here, we do need to be mindful of testing the engine and finding out what it actually will accept or what it wants.
