Step 5: Initial Startup

03.55

00:00 In the next step of our process we finally get to start the engine or at least attempt to get the engine running for the very first time and this is a step that I know can be daunting when you're fairly new to tuning, thinking that you're going to do damage to the engine if everything isn't perfect, as you'll see, nothing could be further from the truth.
00:18 It's important to kind of understand here what we're actually aiming for because we're not trying to do a cell by cell tune and get everything perfect, instead all we're trying to do is get our air fuel ratio into the ballpark and to do this we're just going to be making block changes.
00:34 Now, you've already seen me make tuning changes to cells a couple of different ways including direct entry, what I'm going to do here is just be highlighting an entire section of the table, come out to maybe about 49 kPa here, 50 kPa and what we can do here is make block changes using the control and up and down arrow keys.
00:55 So, control and up arrow will add 1%, control and down arrow will remove 1%.
01:00 So, all I'm going to do is make these block changes here, again not trying to get too fussy, just making sure our air fuel ratio is in the ballpark.
01:09 And to help me with this we are looking at our fuel tuning data monitor over here on the bottom left hand corner and here we've got a few pieces of information that are important.
01:18 We've got our target air fuel ratio which is at the moment sitting at 12.4 as you can see and then we've got our measured air fuel ratio which at the moment we've got the engine not running, so that's not going to display and it may take a moment for that to come online when we first get the engine up and running.
01:34 We can also see that at the moment we've got some coolant enrichment active there, the 15% additional trim and we will also be able to see the status of our closed loop system, so we need to take note of that once the closed loop is active.
01:50 That's obviously going to actively be trying to remove any error and we can take this into account with the changes that we make.
01:58 There is also a background closed loop learning system, but we'll deal with that in a bit more detail and learn how that works once we get into our steady state fuel tuning.
02:09 Now, the other aspect here is it's quite possible that initially we may need to use a little bit of throttle to keep the engine idling, so I generally will have my foot slightly on the throttle or at least ready to add some throttle as I crank the engine and start it up.
02:23 So, with that out of the way, now we know what we're trying to do, let's get the engine started for the very first time.
02:31 OK, so our idle speed's actually way too high, I'm completely off the throttle there, it's coming back down and we see our air fuel ratio sensor is still heating up.
02:40 Now, it's online and we can see we're sitting at 12.5 to one, so we're way too rich.
02:44 We can see our closed loop control has already pulled 20% out, so straight away it's actually, got it onto the target and if you weren't taking note of this 21% trim here, you'd think that we were exactly where we need to be.
02:57 However, we're not, so what we can do is use the control and down arrow key and I'm just going to slowly take some fuel out of this table until we get down to our target.
03:06 Now, we do need to be careful here, if we just took out that 20 odd percent in one go, we're obviously going to swing way too lean and the engine's probably going to stall so, we do need to creep up on this, we can see that that trim's now down to 16%, 15%.
03:20 So, we'll just let it stabilise again, make sure that we are on our target and we'll take out another 3% or 4% in one go.
03:28 I can see we are still in coolant warm up enrichment, so I've got 13% trim active there.
03:34 So, I'm not going to be too fussy here, we're within 10% now of our target and we're at 10% closed lip trim I should say and our RPM's sitting at about 900 RPM, I'm completely off the throttle, everything's sounding good, we've got our engine up and running for the first time, so we're ready to move on to the next step of our process.
