System:

1969 Jag XKE; MaxxECU installed by a professional Mechanic. He is no longer availble.

Car is running VERY VERY rich. After initial installation the engine was removed for paint job so it sat in the garage for over a yearl Once it was put back together Had all sorts o problems. The final step -- Ran two cans of cleaning fluid through the gas tank. It resolved the "hickup" problem". But now it is running way to rich. My thought is if I could run the "auto tune" in the MaxxECU software it would eventually cure the problem.

Problem: How do I turn on the auto feature in the MaxxECU tune software?

Gemini gave me the following information:

o automatically set and fine-tune the fuel-air mixture in a MaxxECU system fitted to a 1969 Jaguar E-Type (XKE), you have two primary automated methods available in the MTune PC software: Live Autotune (via a laptop) and Fuel Adaptation (long-term onboard learning).

I assumed the Essential prerequisites are OK since the engine is running except to rich.

Method B: Onboard Fuel Adaptation (Laptop-Free Driving)

Activate the Feature: In the MTune tree navigation, go to Fuel and select Fuel

Adaptation. Toggle it to Enabled.

Problem: Can't find the commands shown using MaxxECU 160.x (Not sure if x= 2 or 3.

Can I do any damage to the engine? How can I save the tune files so I can recover after I screw things UP?

Thank You..... Al

Maxx ECUs 'autotune' via logs, or by the live logger. Fuel adaption is a different function entirely and unfortunately is somewhat low resolution compared to other ECU brand. That said, I love working with Maxx's, they're just not as set up for 'auto tune' functionality.

With regards to your first question, you don't 'turn it on', you'll need to set up logging, pull a log, and then find and highlight relatively steady state (well, non-transient, it can be full throttle) sections and apply 'Autotune VE' to them.

For adaption it's relatively straightforward, looks like Gemini is steering you in the right direction.

Lastly, to the question of 'can I do any damage to the engine' the short answer is, 'Yes'. Like I said the Maxx ecosystem and its owners don't really subscribe to the 'set and forget' side of modern tuning.

It looks like David has you pretty well covered. I'd definitely recommend starting by saving the existing file. That way you can always revert to that file if things aren't moving in the right direction. The Autotune VE does need to be treated with some caution/care as it is a case of garbage in/garbage out. As David has mentioned, avoid using any logged data where there is transient throttle application as the this can artificially skew your lambda data.
