Hey guys,

I need the pinout for the NGK U5002 ignition coils. I’m currently helping a friend convert his Nissan Sunny B12 to turbo, but we’re facing the problem that we don’t get any ignition spark.

To troubleshoot, we tested the ECU on a CA18DET in an S12 – there we got spark without any issues. On that S12 we are running R8 coils (NGK 48041).

The problem is: I can’t find a reliable pinout for the U5002 coils to make sure the wiring harness pinout matches.

12V via relay is present

Grounds are good

ECU pin assignment is correct

We’ve already tested with different coils

We’ve also tried different pinout diagrams for the coils

What vehicle are those coils used in. Can you look at the factory workshop manual for that to get the pinout?

The Golf 5 1.4 TSI for example. But unfortunately, I don’t have access to the official VW databases, and on the internet I only find unreliable information about the R8 TFSI coils. Nothing to the U5002.

Perhaps this Golf coil wiring diagram will be helpful.

So that would be:

Pin1 - 12V Ign Power

Pin2 - Signal Ground

Pin3 - Signal

Pin4 - Cylinder Head Ground

Thanks, David! I’ll give it a try in the next few days and let you know how it goes.

The 1.4tsi coils are widely known as the "VAG Short" coil, they have a different pinout to the VAG medium and long coils which is what the pinout above is for.

Pic below is looking into the housing on the coil, pin 1 on the left.

We usually reply within 12hrs (often sooner)
