hello....

In a lesson on volumetric efficiency, at the end of the equation, when dividing the actual air flow by the theoretical air flow, where does the number 572 come from? Is it a constant or a variable number? Please explain. Thank you.

Hi Nebras, Sorry for bumping such an old thread! I was browsing through the forum to learn and stumbled upon your question, so I thought I’d leave an answer in case it helps you or anyone else searching for this.

The number 572 is a constant derived from unit conversions in Imperial formulas for 4-stroke engines. It mathematically combines the conversion from cubic inches to cubic feet (1728 in^3 = 1 ft^3), the fact that a 4-stroke engine only intake-fills every 2 revolutions (divided 2), and multiplying by 100 to express Volumetric Efficiency as a percentage. I'm still quite new to tuning and learning the theory myself, but hopefully this clears up where that number comes from!
