Placing comp ring gap on a thrust face, won't do that damage the cylinder especially the major side ?

Ring end gaps should not cause any cylinder wall damage regardless of their orientation.

As David said - remember, piston rings will be rotating slowly in their grooves (unless a 2 stroke where they're pinned) so sometimes they will be there, anyway, sometimes not.

That rotation is also why I, personally, don't bother with their placement - some may have their own ideas on that, though.
