Hey y'all, I am currently swapping a 07k into a Porsche 944. I am wondering whether or not y'all think it is worth tearing down the new engine and rebuilding it or saving the time and money with the stock engine. The 07k was originally from a 2007 rabbit but have been pulled by the used part shop and was sitting outside of the car for an unknown amount of time. The engine had been plugged and I don't see any major signs of rust on it. The components that I have taken off seem to be in good order. It has approximately 70,000 mi on it.
The options as I see it are throw it in the car and hope for the best
Or
Turn down the engine. Get my measurements. Make sure everything's within tolerances. Not sure that I want to spend the money on performance parts but I guess maybe I should look into how much that would cost.
For now, we're keeping this engine naturally aspirated and it is going into a car that is primarily used for endurance racing at the club level.
You could do a quick check of the big ends and mains, that involved little more than time and a new sump gasket, and a compression of, better, leakdown check can give a lot of information on even a cold engine.
You can buy cheap borescopes that will allow you to check the bores via the spark plug holes and, possibly, the backs of the valves via the maifolds/ports.
Pulling the cam' cover will give a good idea of the cam' and valve train condition.
Good call. I’ll probably go this route unless I find something off
