Talk about engine building here. New products, tricky questions or showcase your work - If it's engine building related it's welcome here.
I am building a Yamaha 2011 Apex SE snowmobile engine.
Its done about 8000 kms. Its stock 165 Hp.
I am going to be boosting to 300Hp, roughly 1 bar boost pressure.
I am going to be putting forged JE pistons 9:1 low compression in it and CP Carrillo rods. (Stock pistons are 11.8:1)
I have done minor engine building before but mainly with the head. This is my first lower end venture. I am a fabricator by trade.
Is this something I can do myself with decent tooling or will I need to have this machined/ honed and should I just be handing it over to a professional engine builder?
Piston to wall clearance will need to be within specification. Usually when I got into an engine, there was enough wear on it to go oversized pistons and bore to get the right piston to wall clearance.
You also need to get the piston ring end gap set.
Hone is usually recommended when installing new rings, which sounds like it will be the case for you. People do honing at home with power tools, but I do not know to what success.
That being said, if you have access to tools, you would likely care a lot more about your engine than a machinist. And I have had more bad experiences than good ones when visiting engine machinists.
