Hello everyone, I hope you are doing well. I have a 2009 Suzuki Mehran with a semi-built engine. It has been bored out from 796cc-990cc, larger valves, 2-inch exhaust & larger fuel jets. Next alternation is going to be a more powerful ignition coil from a Honda Vezel. However, I have been warned from a well experienced engine builder that I should retard the ignition timing a bit so that I don't end up punching a hole in the piston from the large increase in ignition energy (he told me from his previous experiences). Should this be a concern? If so, how many degrees of timing retard should I introduce in the engine?

Yeah that's not even remotely true. Ignition energy doesn't control flame speed as once the mixture is ignited the flame front will move away from the spark plug as usual. The characteristic controlled by ignition energy is the amount of time and at what voltage level. It would be more responsible for reliable ignition.

Oh okay, thank you very much.
