Hi everyone,
I've just completed a service and noticed some hair thin metal shavings and some larger bits of metal/bearing material.
Just based on the photos anyone know the severity of this?
How certain are you that these are from the bearings? It's hard to tell from the pictures and most times you'd be more likely to see "glitter" than slivers. Is there any noises you're hearing or low oil pressure?
Sorry I didn't realise anyone replied.
I don't hear any knocking noises or anything else abnormal, so far oil pressure looks good - sitting around 25psi on idle and around 80psi when cruising. Because this is the first 10,000ks of the rebuild I'm afraid this could be the early stages of the crank eating into the bearing before I spin it.
I installed a large capacity oil sump with baffles and scraper and a kiggly hla pressure regulator to hopefully reduce the risk of oil starvation.
I've been driving the car quite hard now and have done a few services with small amounts of glitter which I think is normal.
This previous service with images attached is the first time I played around with 2 step (tuned in before the rebuild) and have been using it purely for the sound 3-4 times now. I wonder if this hasn't been tuned properly and is somehow related?
I'll do another service in the next few weeks and take some more photos of the oil - and be super careful not get in any foreign objects in the filter and oil, also haven't used 2 step to figure out whether it makes a difference.
