Hey everyone.

i wanted to know everyone’s thoughts on timing belts and brand choice. I’m currently building an RB25DET. Nothing on the crazy side, it’ll be a reliable (hopefully) 500bhp.

Regarding timing belts, there’s a lot of choice in terms of OEM, Gates Racing Belt, Nismo, Tomei etc etc.

My question is, are these aftermarket belts actually superior and recommended for a build like mine or is stock perfectly acceptable?

I’m taking the correct measures regarding belt stretch with a crank and cam trigger kit. I just don’t want to make the wrong choice for my timing belt.

My understanding of timing belts is that downshifting, high rpm, and intense valve spring pressure are more relevant than outright power. So if you're using it for modded road use, stock or equivalent should be fine.

Thanks for the reply, Tristan.

The car will be used for drifting so I suppose an aftermarket “race” or performance timing belt would be the better choice.

I was wondering whether the cost is worth the reward. There’s options of Nismo, Gates Racing or HKS. I question if they’re really better than OEM or not

Ah yes, you'll be running it hard so. I'd be tempted by an uprated one, cheap insurance.

What do the likes of Golebys suggest? Or dedicated RB tuners?
