I’m getting a sequential gearbox which has a gear position sensor, but does not have a vehicle speed sensor. Can I calculate vehicle speed from engine rpm + gear position sensor data in the MoTeC software or will I need a dedicated vehicle speed sensor?

Most MoTeC M1 Firmware Packages will generate a vehicle speed channel if the proper rear tire circumference, and gear ratios have been entered.

However, it's much better to fit some wheel speed sensors -- these can be added to the wheel hubs, or even the output flanges of the gearbox. One reason this is important is if the MoTeC is assisting with the shift (rev-matching, shift-without lift upshifts, etc). It works best if it can calculate the vehicle speed while shifting.
