I had a customer with a mild tune on his car coming to the shop because the car would smoke a lot

After full diagnostic, it needed a rebuild since the second compression ring touched and broke a part of the lower side of the piston. Top ring looks great too. It doesn't look like it touched

Top of the piston has no pitting, spark plug looks good, I wasn't able to find anything that might have caused that.

The person who drives the car has absolutely no mechanical sympathy (and probably not much of a brain) so I'm pretty sure he did something but, like any customer, he was driving slowly on a road when this happened.

Anyone has insight on what might cause this?
