Discussion and questions related to the course Practical Motorsport Wiring - Club Level
Hello, all.
I'm finally getting underway with my dream engine swap, and I've hit a wall. The VK56 swap into a 350z (2008 in my case) is very rare in the States, and finding a reliable source for any information is like pulling teeth on a hippo. I have most of the components to do the swap, but no one makes a VK swap harness for a 350z, that I know of. I watched the entire HP Academy harness fabrication course, and I still feel completely overwhelmed at the idea at making a harness to make it work.
Does anyone anywhere know of a shop that makes a drop in kit, someone with the talent to fabricate me one, or is kind enough to walk me through what I'd need to do to make myself one?
My setup:
Chasis - 2008 Nissan 350Z Grand Touring.
Engine - 2008 Nissan Titan VK56DE.
C3 Performance VK56 to JK41B trans adapter kit.
I will likely use one of the OEM ECU's to get it running, but I'd like to use a stand-alone haltech ECU in the near future. I say this only because I don't know how to wire a stand-alone for an engine swap.
Hi Johnathan,
this sounds like an awesome project! I have years of experience running the VK45’s in LMP2 and the VK family of engines is massively overlooked by the aftermarket.
unfortunately your question will take more than a forum post to solve.
If you want to use the OEM kit I’d suggest using the VK ECU, the VQ won’t have enough ignition/injector drivers etc. but you might have to use both to keep the rest of the vehicle happy. Ultimately though, an aftermarket standalone ECU will be the best way forward.
I’d suggest working your way through the corses on HPA and breaking the project down into smaller deliverables and targeting your questions there. As an example rather than start with a whole engine harness break it down into sections - Coils, injectors, control sensors etc then you’ll be able to see what needs 12v, what needs 5v, what can share a ground and how much analogue input do I need to run the sensors.
Hope this goes well would love to see the result!
