Has anyone used one of these for doing bearing clearances etc? Seems like it would be easier to get the actual value, than using telescopic gauges and an inside mic.

Limits you to top of bore. But probably a good sanity check for changeover readings to the other internal guages.

It takes one more potential measuring error out of the equation, which is usually a good thing.

there are a huge range of designs available and, because I don't know the name, I'd stick to Mitutoyo or Starrett brands from an actual dealer.

Yep, absolutely agree - two best brands out there... Love using their stuff.
